Seven Card Stud for Rookies
A recent series of articles gave my readers a beginner’s guide to the increasingly popular poker game Texas Hold ‘Em. However, card sharks who prefer a more traditional style of play can rest assured; seven card stud is still readily available in casinos and at online poker rooms.

Most players probably learned poker by playing some variation of seven card stud; it is very common to find stud spread in home games. However, there are some important differences between casino stud and kitchen table stud. Today’s article will help you make the transition from home player to casino sharpie.

General Overview

In public card rooms, seven card stud is played with up to eight players at a table. Games are offered from low spreads to high limits. Stud is similar to hold ‘em in its bet size structure. A 10-20 stud game has the same bet structure as a 10-20 hold ‘em game: the earlier rounds of betting are in the smaller increment, the later rounds are at the higher.

There is one major difference; hold ‘em is played with blinds, while stud is played with antes. Antes are the initial fee that must be paid in order to be able to play the hand. Every player must pay the ante before cards are dealt in order to receive cards.

After the antes have been paid, the dealer will give each player two down cars and one face up card. These 3 cards compose your starting hand. The lowest up card will be forced to be the ‘bring in’ to start the betting action. The ‘bring in’ will be forced to throw in a small bet. Now, other players will have to call the bring in or fold. Action moves to the left of the bring in. You must now decide to play on or to fold based on the strength of this holding combined with the strength of the holdings of the other players. Remember, in stud you get to see how the other players’ hands develop. Based on a player’s up cards, you can estimate their hand and decide if you have a chance to beat them.
